Drinking DIOS-MIO

I’m new here. Where should I start?

Firstly, welcome! The mushroom kingdom is both fascinating and biodiverse so we'll stick to the basics.

If you want coffee-alternative/energising drink our Mushroom Coffee is the best place to start. It contains a mix of adaptogenic mushrooms (Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga) combined with rich Peruvian cacao and Ayurvedic spices. It’s an easy (and yum) way to bring the benefits of mushrooms into your life.

If you’re searching for something specific, our Mushroom Extract Powders are the way to go. You can add them to any hot or cold drink, smoothie, or even your granola and soups. The possibilities are endless.

  • Lion’s Mane is the “focus mushroom” used for the flow-state focus, cognitive function and gut health. It's a procrastinator’s best friend and probably the most well-known from the group.

  • Cordyceps is the “performance mushroom” used for stamina, pre-workout or when you just need that boost. Athlete’s love this. It can also boost libido in both men and women.

  • Tremella is the “beauty mushroom”, it supports collagen production and used for hydrating the body inside and out. Skin care brands often use this in their hydrating creams.

  • Chaga is the “immunity mushroom” used for all things energy, immune defense and healthy skin. It has the highest antioxidant levels of any natural food. 600 blueberries = one teaspoon of Chaga. Mind blowing and a lot easier to consume!

  • Turkey Tail is the “immortality mushroom” used as a supportive immune defense with it's anti-viral properties. Asia has used this mushroom for centuries to promote well-functioning immune health.

  • Reishi is “the calm mushroom” used for calming the mind and body, assisting immunity and promoting a healthy sleep cycle. With adaptogenic qualities, Reishi can balance your nervous system so you experience less cortisol spikes (stress).
Are these "magic mushrooms"?

Nope, these mushrooms do not contain any psychoactive compounds. They are legal, purely functional and safe to be consumed daily. Still, ‘magic’ in their own way.

However, we do applaud the developments into psilocybin therapies (the 'magic mushrooms') to help patients with depression, PTSD, and other mental health struggles. We are contributing a portion of our profits to assist in the development of psilocybin therapies in Australia.

When & how should I drink DIOS-MIO?
  • "Super-Coffee" Mushroom Coffee: Stir 2 teaspoons to 150 ml of boiled water, then add milk and/or sweetener if desired. And voila! You've made yourself a delicious, healthy coffee replacement. It's worth noting that a serve of mushroom coffee contains approximately 15mg of caffeine compared with an average 80mg cup of coffee. If you have a low tolerance to caffeine, best to avoid before bedtime.
  • Mushroom Extract Powders: Add ½ teaspoon (per mushroom powder) to your coffee, tea or smoothie, or simply stir into a cup of hot water. If you're sensitive to natural remedies, start with less and increase dosage when your body feels ready. All the mushroom powders are caffeine-free so you can take them both in the morning and evening.
Can I mix the mushrooms?

Absolutely! All mushrooms offer unique benefits which complement each other. It's safe to mix them.

Does it taste like mushrooms?

No, don't worry!

Our Mushroom Coffee is a combination of the rich cacao, the earthy & nutty taste of mushrooms, and the spiciness and sweetness from cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and a kick of cayenne pepper. Adding a sweetener or milk to the cup will balance the bitterness of the cacao. Whatever you choose, you've got yourself a pretty addictive blend.

Our Mushroom Extract Powders have no overpowering taste so adding them to your coffee won’t make it 'mushroomy'. If you happen to have very perceptive taste buds, you might feel a slight change in the taste. If it's overpowering, you may have added too much.

Is it safe for children?

While there is research to support the benefits that functional mushrooms can offer children, it’s important to note that this is not definitive. As new research emerges, we will keep you posted.

In the meantime, consult your paediatrician before introducing anything new into their diet, particularly if they’re on medication.

Can I consume mushrooms while pregnant or breastfeeding?

While our mushroom powders are all 100% organic, natural and caffeine free, there isn’t definitive research to give us the all clear. Our Super-Coffee contains 15mg of caffeine per serving.

So please consult your doctor or health care practitioner before taking mushrooms if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can I consume mushrooms while I’m on prescription medications?

The short answer is, it depends. Mushrooms can sometimes interact with certain prescription drugs, so please consult your doctor or health care practitioner before adding anything new into your diet.

Your doctor will have access to your medical history and a list of specific medications that may not interact well. With this information, you can make an informed decision.

When will I feel the results?

As mushrooms are purely natural products, each person will experience the benefits differently. Some will feel a difference immediately, others after a few months. A general rule of thumb is about 1-2 months.

Our only rule is to take them consistently. Functional mushrooms can take a bit of time to start working their magic so don’t give up on these natural wonders too soon. Finding a way to incorporate them into your current routine is a sure way to find something that sticks.

We also offer a discounted subscription service which means you'll have mushrooms delivered to your door whenever you need them.

Sourcing & Quality

Where do your mushrooms grow?

We source all of our mushrooms from their Di Dao spiritual homes in China and Siberia where they have grown for thousands of years.

Di Dao refers to the traditional practice of growing and cultivating herbs and fungi in their spiritual homeland. It roughly translates to: from a place known for the produce.

Where is your cacao grown and sourced?

Our cacao is cultivated in the Amazon region in Peru using sustainable farming practices.

We use the single organic criollo variety which is common for Ceremonial grade due to its thorough fermentation process which retains the most nutritional density.

Several groups of organic farmers forming a cooperative cultivate the premium Theobroma Cacao in its native environment. These farmers have received training on how to cultivate the Cacao using only organic farming techniques without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

The beans are extracted from the inside of the Cacao fruit which contains both the beans (seeds) and a white pulp. The beans are separated from the pulp and left to ferment for 6-7 days. After fermentation, the beans are sun dried for 3-4 days.

Are DIOS-MIO products lab tested?

Yes, we take quality very seriously and we conduct comprehensive lab testing on all our products. Every batch of our mushrooms are screened for heavy metals, pesticides, moulds, yeasts, grains and other chemicals to ensure they are free from any harmful contaminants.

After thorough lab testing, they are packed in our warehouse in Melbourne, Australia and sent to you.

Are DIOS-MIO products organic?

Yes, all our products are 100% USDA and EU-Certified Organic.

Functional Mushroom Basics

What are medicinal mushrooms?

Medicinal mushrooms (aka functional mushrooms) are types of mushrooms that are full of beneficial bioactive compounds (like beta-glucans & polysaccharides) that can provide a fantastic amount of health benefits to our body & mind.

Medicinal mushrooms have the ability to help ease stress, improve memory and cognition, support gut health, boost immunity…the list is long and impressive.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has utilised mushrooms for thousands of years for their healing properties.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are natural substances found in certain mushrooms and herbs that have a unique ability to help our bodies adapt to all kinds of stress. Adaptogens regulate all of our physical systems: endocrine, nervous, immune, digestive, and cardiovascular.

All our mushrooms are considered adaptogens except for Tremella and Turkey Tail.

What are beta-glucans?

Beta-glucans are a type of dietary fibre found in certain types of mushrooms that gives them their medicinal properties. They help activate our immune system and help our body fight against bacteria, viruses, tumours and infections.

We use a meticulous extraction process to preserve all the best bits, and then test all of our extracts in the lab to make sure they register for at least 30% beta-glucans (one of the highest levels attainable).

What does ‘100% Fruiting Body’ mean?
  • Fruiting Body is the visible part of the mushroom that grows above ground and is packed with a concentrated dose of beta-glucans (the good stuff). 100% Fruiting Bodies means the mushroom powder is created using only the fruiting body to get the most potent medicinal mushroom product.
  • Mycelium, in contrast, is the ‘root’ of the mushroom that spreads under ground. Mycelium produces the bioactive compounds (mainly beta-glucans) that make these mushrooms medicinal but doesn't itself contain much of these compounds as it sends most of them to the fruiting body.

It's important to note that mycelium mushroom products are cheaper to produce and often contain a lot of extra fillers such as the grain they grow on because it's impossible to separate. You should expect the product to contain less of the good stuff (mushroom) and therefore less potent.

What to check for when buying mushrooms?

Creating pure mushroom extract is labour-intensive and expensive, so many companies use fillers and mycelium to cut the costs.

To avoid buying overpriced mushrooms with little to no nutritional value, look for products that say “100% fruiting body” and beta-glucans levels of at least 10%. Avoid any products that contain mycelium or use marketing terms such as ‘whole mushroom’ or ‘full spectrum’.

The problem with using mycelium in the mushroom powder is that it is impossible to separate the good beta-glucans from the grain and fillers that the mycelium has grown on. So if a product contains mycelium, it means the mushroom contains very little of the beta-glucans (the stuff that gives the mushroom its bioactive compounds).

At DIOS-MIO take great pride in only using 100% fruiting bodies with a very high level on beta-glucans.
